New publication on protest event datasets by team member Jan Matti Dollbaum

Daphi, P, Dollbaum, J.M., Haunss, S., Meier, L. (2024): Local protest event analysis: providing a more comprehensive picture?

21.06.2024

This article compares a new original protest event data set based on local newspapers to an established data set based on national-level newswires and newspapers. It finds that the issues covered substantively diverge, with local sources covering much more social, labour, environmental and infrastructural protest, while national sources emphasize cultural issues like migration. While the case is outside the regional focus of this research group, it’s still methodologically relevant, as it demonstrates the high sensitivity of event data to the input source, something that will be important for the project’s upcoming data gathering tasks.
